Brazilian telco Embratel has launched a new communications satellite called Star One C3 for Brazil and the Andean region covering Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

The device will last 16 years and was launched into space by the Airanespace in the Ariane-5 rocket, which was based on the European Space Centre in Kourou.

The Star One C3 replaces the 21B Brasilsat satellite. It has a mass of 3.2 tons, 16 Ku-band transponders and 28 C-band transponders and was manufactured by the American company Orbital Sciences, reports Prensario Internacional citing Spanish news agency EFE.

As well as the Brazilian satellite, the rocket also transported the 21B Eutelsat satellite, built by Thales Alenia Space. With 40 Ku-band transponders this satellite provides data transmission services, video and government services across Europe, North Africa, Middle East and Central Asia.
