'Blue Bloods' actress: Show ouster is 'shameful'

By Us Weekly

"Blue Bloods'"?Jennifer Esposito is fighting mad.?Shortly after Deadline.com reported that the actress -- who has played Donnie Wahlberg's partner Jackie Curatola on the CBS series for three seasons -- was written off the show after going on medical leave, Esposito took to Twitter to slam her bosses.

PHOTOS: Iconic TV characters

In a statement to Deadline Saturday, CBS TV Studios said Esposito, 39, was only able to work on a "part-time schedule" and that the show "regretfully had to put her character on a leave of absence" as a result.

Though CBS declined to go into specifics about the reason for her departure, Esposito revealed in a series of angry tweets that she was forced to sit out upcoming episodes under doctors' orders as she received treatment for celiac disease.?

PHOTOS: Celebs' medical concerns

"CBS put me on unpaid leave and has blocked me from working anywhere else after my doctor said you needed a reduced schedule due to Celiac (disease)," tweeted Esposito, who suffers from the autoimmune disease of the small intestine.

"CBS didn't listen to my doc and I collapsed on set. Which everyone saw! After a week off, my doc said I could return to work but CBS implied that I was not truly ill and this was a scheme to get a raise!" the actress continued. "It's been almost two months without bringing me back to work and keeping me from working anywhere else! Absolutely shameful behavior."

PHOTOS: Stars at work

An outspoken advocate for those suffering with celiac, Esposito has already filmed her (tentatively) final ?"Blue Bloods" episode, which will air on Nov. 2. CBS intends to use a rotating cast of actresses to appear as Danny Reagan's temporary partner. Megan Ketch will be introduced as his first fill-in on the November 2 show, and appear in four episodes.?

Said the studio: "(Jennifer) is a wonderfully talented actress and we hope that she will be able to return at some point in the future."

The Quick and Easy Way to Benefit from Detox Diet to Lose Weight

Detox diet is one of the more effective ways to get rid of your excess weight. What it does is to flush out toxins and harmful substances from your body.

These substances interfere with the normal functions of your body systems such as your digestive and endocrine systems resulting to weight problems. To free your body from these toxic substances, you need to detoxify and diet is one method that proves effective.

Benefits

Several benefits await you from doing detoxification through diet. Here are just some of the most remarkable ones relative to weight loss:

Your digestive system will function optimally.
You will free yourself from common digestive problems such as indigestion, bloating, constipation, all of which are factors to weight problems.
You will improve your metabolism to convert fats into consumable energy. The less fats your body stores, the fewer chances you will carry excess weight.
You will feel lighter and better. In turn, this will motivate you to develop good eating habits to keep your recommended weight.

Before you decide to enjoy all these benefits, it is crucial that you consult your physician. This is to rule out any existing health condition you may have and prevent any complication. Make sure that you have a clean bill of health before you start the detoxification diet plan.

Essentials of Detoxification

You will need a detoxification plan to start benefiting from the process. The plan consists of what food to eat and what not to eat during the process, as well as its duration. In choosing your detox diet, it helps that you weigh it based on your needs. Go for the plan that is both safe and effective in delivering quick results of weight loss.

Another factor to consider is simplicity of the process. The ideal detoxification plan is not too restrictive that it feels like an ordeal. Regardless of how mild or gentle the process is, it should cleanse your body system that will help you get rid of your unnecessary weight.

Simple Detoxification Plan

Your simple detoxification diet plan consists of the following:

Daily drinking at least ten (10) glasses of water- this is the main component of your diet. Water is the best natural cleansing agent that can flush out easily and quickly harmful substances in your body.
Fruits and vegetables ? in the detoxification process, you will need to empty your stomach and rest your body from usual food you eat. Vegetables will nourish your body to help you with satiation, and fruits will cleanse your systems to eliminate toxins.
You may also take vitamin supplements to make sure there is no nutritional gap while undergoing detoxification. Two essential vitamins are vitamins C and E.

Vitamin C helps strengthen your immune system, and encourages production of glutathione to protect against toxic substances. Vitamin E, meanwhile, serves as your shield against free radicals while your diet plan is getting rid of toxins.

It helps that you do an occasional detox, or as the need arises. This will prevent build-up of toxins in your body, which is one of the key factors for your excess weight. Get rid of toxins and you will see how it becomes easy for you to lose your unnecessary weight.

Beirut car bomb kills 8, link seen to Syria war

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A huge car bomb that exploded in central Beirut during rush hour on Friday killed a top security official and seven others, wounded about 80 and heightened fears that Syria's war is aggravating tensions in Lebanon.

Among the victims was Wissam al-Hassan, who was in charge of a top intelligence unit, Lebanon's al-Jadeed television said. He had led an investigation that uncovered a recent bomb plot that led to the arrest of a pro-Syrian Lebanese politician.

Analysts said the bombing, which was reminiscent of grim scenes from Lebanon's own 1975-1990 civil war, was linked to the heightened tension between Lebanese factions on opposite sides of the conflict in neighboring Syria.

The explosion ripped through the street where the office of the anti-Damascus Christian Phalange Party is located near Sassine Square in Ashrafiyeh, a mostly Christian area.

Phalange leader Sami al-Gemayel, a staunch opponent of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and a member of parliament, condemned the attack.

"Let the state protect the citizens. We will not accept any procrastination in this matter, we cannot continue like that. We have been warning for a year. Enough," said Gemayel, whose brother was assassinated in November 2006.

The war in Syria, which has killed 30,000 people in the past 19 months, has pitted mostly Sunni insurgents against Assad, who is from the Alawite sect linked to Shi'ite Islam.

Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those supporting Assad and those backing the rebels trying to overthrow him.

The blast occurred during rush hour, when many parents were picking up children from school, and sent black smoke billowing into the sky.

Eight people were killed and at least 78 were wounded, the state news agency said, quoting civil defense officials.

Several cars were destroyed and the front of a multi-storey building was badly damaged, with tangled wires and metal railings crashing to the ground.

SCENES REMINISCENT OF DARK DAYS

In the aftermath, residents ran about in panic looking for relatives while others helped carry the wounded to ambulances. Security forces blanketed the area.

In scenes reminiscent of the dark days of the Lebanese civil war, ambulances ferried the wounded to several hospitals, where doctors, nurses and students waited for casualties at the doors. At one, an elderly woman sat in the emergency room with blood staining her blouse.

The hospitals put out an appeal for blood donations.

An employee of a bank on the street pointed to the blown-out windows of his building.

"Some people were wounded from my bank. I think it was a car bomb. The whole car jumped five floors into the air," he said.

Michael Fish, 25, a British musician visiting Beirut, said he was in his hotel a street away when the explosion happened.

"At first I thought it was an earthquake. It shook the whole hotel for a second."

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said in a statement that the government was trying to find out who carried out the attack and said those responsible would be punished.

The prospect that Syria's war might spread to Lebanon has worried many people here and fighting broke out in February between supporters and opponents of Assad in the northern city of Tripoli.

Syria has played a major role in Lebanese politics, siding with different factions during the civil war. It deployed troops in Beirut and parts of the country during the war and they stayed until 2005.

In Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoabie told reporters: "We condemn this terrorist explosion and all these explosions wherever they happen. Nothing justifies them."

Tension between Sunnis, Shi'ites and Christians in Lebanon has continued after the civil war but has increased with the Syria conflict erupted.

"CANNOT BE ISOLATED FROM SYRIA"

Nabil Boumonsef, a columnist at the Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar, said: "They warned of the implications of the Syrian crisis and here it comes. Who did it and why nobody knows but what is certain is that it cannot be isolated from what is happening in Syria."

"The explosion shows that Lebanon cannot be safe and peaceful in the middle of this situation boiling around it."

He hoped the bombing did not mark the start of a new era of such attacks.

"The regional conflagration of course will have its implications on the Lebanese scene. They are dragging in Lebanon so that it becomes a conflict arena," he told Reuters.

Sunni-Shi'te rivalry hit a peak when former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, a Sunni, was killed in 2005. Hariri supporters accused Syria and then Hezbollah of killing him - a charge they both deny. An international tribunal accused several Hezbollah members of involvement in the murder.

Hezbollah's political opponents, who have for months accused it of aiding Assad's forces, have warned that its involvement in Syria could reignite the sectarian tension of the civil war.

Sarkis Naoum, a columnist on Syrian affairs at an-Nahar said: "This is all interlinked to the sectarian and political conflict, and the conflict among intelligence services in the region. The aim of this is to spoil things."

Bombings were a hallmark of the civil war but the last such attack in Beirut was in 2008 when three people were killed in an explosion which damaged a U.S. diplomatic car.

Beirut has undergone massive reconstruction to repair the damage from the civil war and in recent years has enjoyed a tourist boom, boosted by Beirut's pulsating nightlife. That is now also under threat.

McDonald's sales growth cools, chilled by competition

(Reuters) - McDonald's Corp posted its worst quarterly restaurant sales growth performance in nine years on Friday, lifting the curtain on the fast-food industry's ruthless fight for customers in a weak economy.

The world's biggest fast-food chain is battling more than the bleak global economy that is curbing appetites for purchases of its hamburgers, salads and smoothies. Resurgent chains like Burger King Worldwide Inc and Yum Brand Inc's Taco Bell now are challenging McDonald's in the United States with revamped menus, celebrity endorsers and a renewed focus on low-priced food.

McDonald's domestic market falls just behind Europe as the company's top region for sales.

Easing food cost inflation has allowed U.S. restaurants to step up their menu price wars. "It's led to a very cutthroat restaurant environment," Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy said.

"You have a scenario where the overall pie is shrinking, and companies are competing aggressively to take their piece of it," Bernstein Research analyst Sara Senatore said.

When asked to explain why the third quarter's results lagged even those put up during the height of the financial crisis, McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Don Thompson attributed the results to the tougher battle for stomachs and economic challenges in each of the company's major regions.

That confluence of factors forced McDonald's to miss Wall Street's earnings estimates for the second quarter in a row. It also warned that sales at established restaurants - a closely watched gauge of restaurant performance - are down so far this month.

"When the economic crisis began in 2008, few people thought the environment would still be as uncertain and fragile as it is today," Thompson said.

"It is clear, however, that this operating environment is the new normal," said the CEO, who added that the company's marketshare is flat or up in all major markets.

McDonald's is not alone in its woes.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc on Thursday forecast a slowdown in same-restaurant sales growth for 2013. The popular burrito chain also said it wasn't losing customers to competitors like Taco Bell, but investors saw its guidance as a signal that Chipotle's days of torrid growth may be over.

The setbacks reported by the two top industry performers sent sector shares lower on Friday. McDonald's stock fell 4.5 percent to close at $88.72, Chipotle tumbled 15 percent to $243 and Yum slipped 2.8 percent to $70.09. McDonald's and Chipotle get significant business from the United States, while China is Yum's primary market.

CURRENCY HIT

Third-quarter net income at McDonald's fell 3.5 percent to $1.46 billion, or $1.43 per share, from $1.51 billion, or $1.45 per share, a year earlier. It missed analysts' average estimate by 4 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Total sales slipped 0.2 percent to $7.15 billion.

The impact of a stronger dollar, which decreases the value of sales overseas for U.S. companies, trimmed earnings by 8 cents per share.

McDonald's global sales at restaurants open at least 13 months rose 1.9 percent, the first gain of less than 2 percent since the second quarter of 2003.

That result just missed the 2 percent increase that analysts polled by Consensus Metrix had expected because of shortfalls in the United States and the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APMEA) region.

Expectations were muted for Europe, where government belt-tightening has hurt demand. Still, results topped estimates after the company's emphasis on value-priced meals like the McDeal extra value meal helped offset a drop in traffic.

Analysts said McDonald's will use its size and business acumen to keep its edge over rivals.

"This chain will just have to grind through this. We're confident they can do this with their brand power and their advertising budget," Edward Jones analyst Jack Russo said.

Analysts expect other restaurant operators to lower expectations for this quarter and the next.

They say same-restaurant sales gains will be hard to come by because results from last year got a bump from unseasonably warm weather that freed up cash that otherwise would have gone to pay heating bills. It also will be difficult to offset food costs with menu price increases because traffic is already weak.

"It's not getting easier out there," Lazard Capital Markets analyst Matthew DiFrisco said.
