Michael Douglas supports son in court appeal

Michael Douglas simply played the role of Dad Wednesday in a Manhattan courtroom.?The Oscar winner turned up in support of son Cameron Douglas, who is currently appealing the 54 extra months of prison time that was slapped onto his initial five-year sentence for narcotics distribution after he was caught with heroin behind bars.?

Douglas wouldn't say much to reporters outside the courthouse, only noting that his son's case was "on appeal" and "clearly" he's hoping for the best, according to the New York Daily News.?

Michael Douglas opens up about his son's drug problem and prison sentence

Cameron's attempt to shorten the second leg of his sentence followed a report that he was nursing injuries after being attacked in prison. Officials said that any information pertaining to an alleged attack could only be released with the prisoner's permission.

"I'm not suggesting Cameron Douglas shouldn't be punished for this," defense attorney Paul Shechtman told the Second Circuit Court of Appeals today. In court documents he called his client's 54-month sentence "shockingly long " and "maybe the harshest sentence ever imposed on a federal prisoner for a drug possession offense."

The case is currently under review.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is "sick of talking about" her bipolar disorder

Cameron, who was facing a minimum of 10 years, was sentenced to a relatively lenient five years in prison in January 2010 after copping to narcotics distribution and turning state's evidence.

Not long after he testified against an accused drug supplier in October 2011, prison staff caught him with the opioid dependence medication Suboxone, as well as a small amount of heroin. He pleaded guilty to having drugs in prison in a deal that entailed another 12 to 18 months behind bars.

Before he was sentenced, however, prosecutors learned via another defendant in a drug case that Cameron had lied about how he got his hands on the contraband and Judge Richard Berman threw the book at him, saying he had never seen a defendant act so "recklessly and wantonly and flagrantly and criminally."

Best of the best celebrity mug shots

"While we recognize that many of the words that the district court used to describe Cameron's conduct -- 'reckless,' 'manipulative,' 'destructive' -- were apt, the simple truth is that Cameron Douglas is a heroin addict who has yet to shake his habit," Shechtman stated in his brief.

RedBankGreen ? RETAIL CHURN: FUR, BOOZE & YOGURT

Steven Corn Furs plans to nestle in at 21 Broad Street, former showroom for Agostino Antiques. (Click to enlarge)

By JOHN T. WARD

Rcsm2_010508In:? a century-old fur retailer and a liquor store.

Out: the oldest of Red Bank?s three frozen yogurt shops.

It?s the never-ending Churn?

Royal Wines and Spirits is taking over the space at 24 White Street that was long the home of Space Interiors. (Click to enlarge)

? A sign in the window of the former Agostino Antiques, which was in wind-down mode at 21 Broad Street for many months, indicates the next tenant will be Steven Corn Furs.

Owner Steven Corn did not return a call from redbankgreen seeking comment. The company?s website says the business was launched by Corn?s grandfather in New York City in 1898 and now has stores in midtown Manhattan and Paramus.

Corn would be the town?s second furrier, joining Winters Furs on Monmouth Street.

? Also not returning calls: Bharat Patel, who?s listed in town records as the contact for Royal Wines and Spirits. According to signs in the papered-over windows at 24 White Street, Royal is coming soon to the 2,000-square-foot spot, at the corner of English Plaza. It follows Space Interiors, which decamped to Deal earlier this year.

The Bharat Patel who owns On the Rocks Wine & Liquor on Shrewsbury Avenue says he knows nothing about the White Street business.

Downtown Red Bank already has three liquor stores: Heritage Liquors, at Broad and East Front streets; the Wine Cellar, on Monmouth; and Red Bank Liquors, on West Street.

? As reported on redbankgreen?s Facebook page, Danny Natale held an auction Monday for all the equipment in his Frozs?rt frozen yogurt shop at 6 Monmouth Street.

The business, which opened in 2010, has kept spotty hours in recent months as it struggled to compete with two new, nearby competitors: Kravings, on Broad Street, and Yo Mon, in the City Centre shopping center on Water Street.

Natale could not be reached for comment.

Wal-Mart seen facing sizable fines in U.S. bribery probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores may be facing sizable fines related to allegations of widespread bribery at its Mexican affiliate, after a second report from the New York Times provided more details about the scope of the alleged misconduct.

Experts said the latest report, published online late on Monday, is significant because it appears to show that the alleged bribes were a substantial part of its business methods, and more than routine payments to speed up approvals, which are allowed under U.S. law.

The newspaper said the world's largest retailer opened some 19 stores by using hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to get what local laws otherwise prohibited.

On Monday, Wal-Mart said the allegations in the Times report have been part of the investigation of potential FCPA violations the company began conducting more than a year ago. Wal-Mart declined to provide additional comment on Tuesday.

In April the newspaper reported that Wal-Mart had stifled an internal probe of bribery at its Mexican affiliate Walmex , but gave the impression that many of the bribes paid may have been used to facilitate approval processes already in motion.

"I think the Times story, if it is true, changes the perception of the Wal-Mart matter from being about facilitating payments to something larger than that," said Danforth Newcomb, an expert on the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act who defends such cases at the law firm Shearman & Sterling.

The latest story describes, for example, $765,000 in bribes that helped Walmex build a refrigerated distribution center in an environmentally fragile area where electricity was scarce and smaller developers were turned away. It also describes in detail how Walmex allegedly paid $52,000 to change a zoning map so it could open a store near the ancient pyramids in Teotihuacan.

It is difficult to put a ballpark figure on any settlement, especially because the U.S. investigation of Wal-Mart is in early stages, but experts said it could rival other major FCPA cases.

In the largest FCPA case to date, Siemens paid $800 million to resolve allegations of widespread bribery in 2008. In other sizable cases, KBR and its former parent Halliburton paid $579 million in 2009, and BAE Systems paid $400 million in 2010.

The company is cooperating with the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on the matter.

Representatives of the SEC and DOJ declined to comment.

Shares of Wal-Mart rose 30 cents to close at $69.50 on the New York Stock Exchange.

POTENTIAL FINES

The Justice Department usually calculates fines in foreign bribery cases either by levying a per-violation fine or a penalty tied to the profits a company earned through the alleged bribery. Related SEC settlements usually also involve disgorging profits earned due to the bribery.

Including Walmex's profits at stores throughout Mexico could prove a sizable fine. It is unclear how many of the roughly 2,000 locations in Mexico could be included.

In 2011, Walmex posted gross profit of nearly 83.7 billion pesos ($6.58 billion).

In 2004, the year in which it allegedly pushed for zoning to open the store near the ancient pyramids, Walmex's gross profit was 28.84 billion pesos ($2.27 billion). The 2011 results include Central America.

When calculating potential fines, prosecutors take into account how widespread the conduct was and whether senior management knew about it or was involved in any way. Wal-Mart has said it is investigating allegations related to its operations in Brazil, India, and China.

"Wal-Mart de Mexico didn't stumble into a bit of bribery. If the allegations are correct, it used systematic bribery as part of its business strategy as a way to grow," said Richard Cassin, an FCPA expert and author of a popular FCPA blog.

The company's costs to conduct the entire investigation - which already stand at $100 million - could be larger than its eventual fines, lawyers said.

Wal-Mart has also been proactive with other measures that could blunt some demands from authorities. When settling FCPA cases, companies are usually required to make some management changes and overhaul their compliance programs.

In October the company said it reorganized its compliance department and created a new global chief compliance officer position as part of an overhaul of its anti-corruption efforts.

The company has spent some $35 million to update its anti-corruption program and has named a new chief compliance officer for Wal-Mart International and a new vice president of global investigations, which are both new positions for the company. It also named a new chief compliance officer for Walmex, and created a new global FCPA compliance officer position.

Emily Harris emphasizes total wellness, announces new campus rec opportunities

For Emily Harris, director of campus recreation, physical activity and good nutrition aren?t just her job. They?re a vital part of her lifestyle.

Harris, who has Type 1 diabetes, thyroiditis and a chronic kidney disease, said her health struggles contribute to her passion for helping college students achieve wellness.

?My own personal battles with my own health makes me passionate for teaching people how to be healthy,? she said. ?With the chronic diseases that I have ? which most people don?t even know that I have ? I understand how hard it is to balance your health. Some people it?s a choice; some people it?s not. And if you have the choice to prevent it, by all means, prevent that from happening.?

Harris is a 2007 Lipscomb graduate, who competed four years on the university tennis team, before accepting a job opening here in fall 2008.

When Harris began working at Lipscomb, there was only an intramurals program. Harris said during her interview for the position, she presented a comprehensive approach to campus recreation.

?I basically presented a whole model for Lipscomb that would be a comprehensive program that would meet more students? needs than just sport,? she explained. ?There would be this whole component of being active in body, mind and spirit. We still encompass that whole approach of spiritual, physical, mental, emotional training.?

In addition to her campus recreation duties, Harris runs the Lipscomb University Racquet Club with her husband Andrew, who coaches the university men?s and women?s tennis teams.Harris said the two first met while both were competing on Lipscomb?s tennis team during the undergraduate education here.

Harris said her constant goal with campus recreation is to provide an abundance of opportunities for students to be physically active.

?My biggest goal at Lipscomb is having as many opportunities for people to try as many types of things as they want to try to figure out what they like,? she said. ?We?re always developing new programming that might only impact 10 people on this campus, but again, it?s something where they can form relationships and enjoy something.?

This fall, campus recreation started ?a personal training crash course,? which allowed eight students each month to work with a personal trainer for free for one month.

?Our goal there is for them to be exposed, to see what personal training is like so later on down the road, say they?re 30 and they want to hire a personal trainer, they have eliminated this hokeyness of ?oh a personal trainer, I can?t hire them, it?s too hard,?? Harris explained.

Harris said the personal training crash course was ?partner established? so that two students were able to do the training sessions together.

Campus recreation also purchased an inflatable four-sided rock climbing wall, which stands 30 feet high and has real harnesses and karabiners, according to Harris. She said since they can?t afford to install a real rock wall, this is just one way to try to accomplish what students want.

?Our goal is, if students really want something, we want to provide that,? she said.

Before starting at Lipscomb, Harris worked as a corporate wellness trainer at D1 Sports Training. Harris said working with people ages 25 to 60 taught her that it?s often too late for preventive health efforts.

?It was almost too late at that point,? she said of people in that demographic. ?People already had hypertension, they already had Type 2 diabetes, they were already battling chronic obesity.?

During her undergraduate work, Harris spent time with elementary, middle and high school students. She said students at that age are too young to truly ?absorb that information, to actually implement it in their life.?

Harris said college students seem to be at the right age for understanding the need for physical activity and good nutrition and are capable of taking action to prevent health complications later in life. Harris said she tries to ?educate and equip? students to prevent chronic diseases and to find balance in life.

?I want people to enjoy life, and you can enjoy life when you?re healthy,? she said.

According to Harris, American culture doesn?t demonstrate how to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

?There?s nothing feeding our culture, specifically media, on how to be healthy, how to eat for optimum health, how to be physically active,? she said. ?The only things we see, as far as being physically active, is the extreme end on TV. You?ve got Biggest Loser and then all you add to that is your Olympic athletes being idolized on TV. So, there?s no balance on, how do you live in moderation?physical activity or nutrition. It?s either McDonald?s or you?re an extreme athlete; there?s no in between.?

Harris said one major lesson she?s learned is that everyone?s experiences have a unique influence on who they are.

?Every individual person has such a unique journey that really shaves the lens on how they perceive the world,? she said. ?For me, in my profession, to truly help someone, I have to understand everything in their childhood up to where they are now and then where they want to be on top of that.?

Harris said her staff often asks, ?What?s really going on here?? when working with students to determine what?s preventing them from achieving personal goals.

?We really have to understand where someone has come from to help them get to where they want to be,? she said. ?It might be that something is holding them back from their past that they don?t even realize is holding them back from reaching a specific goal.?

Harris encourages students to find appropriate balance because she believes it influences their ability to be successful in life.

?Really spend time finding balance in your life,? she said. ?Use the model that if you seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, then everything will be added to you. And ?everything? that I believe will be added to you would be physical health, emotional health, mental and spiritual. When those things are balanced, then you can be successful in your career, you can be successful as a boyfriend and girlfriend or husband and wife. God will put you in the right place for your life. When you have that balance in your life, anything is possible.?

Union to monitor Miami Marlins after payroll purge

(AP) ? The players' association will monitor the Miami Marlins following their payroll purge, saying it is too early to determine whether the salary cuts will cause any issues under baseball's labor contract.

After complaints by the union that the Marlins weren't using revenue-sharing money to improve, the players' association, Major League Baseball and the Marlins reached a three-year agreement in January 2010 that the team would increase payroll annually as it prepared to move into its new ballpark in 2012.

After opening last season with a $112 million payroll, the Marlins cut it to $90 million by the end of the season. With the trade of All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and four others to Toronto on Tuesday, Miami's payroll next season projects to be around $36 million.

Commissioner Bud Selig approved the deal Monday.

"We understand and we're not surprised at the commissioner's decision to approve the trade," union head Michael Weiner said Tuesday. "We'll be monitoring the Marlins for compliance with the Basic Agreement throughout the 2013 season."

Baseball's labor contract requires that revenue-sharing money be used by a team "in an effort to improve its performance on the field." If a team's payroll in a year is less than 125 percent of its revenue- sharing receipts, the burden to show compliance would shift to the team in a grievance.

"Clearly there is no compliance issue," Weiner said. "They were compliant in 2012 based on their payroll and what their revenue-sharing status was."

Increase Business Revenue by Outsourcing Payroll Services

Posted By: articlemanager

Outsourcing still is considered as buzzword these days in the business world as more and more companies are taking advantage of the same. Many people have conception that outsourcing implies paying to those people or companies who perform the task. These people can belong to same country or foreign country. But, it defines only one aspect of outsourcing. It can also be defined as hiring independent contractors and paying them for the work performed by them. Most of the companies opt for outsourcing payroll services to authorized partners as it helps in saving time and money of companies.

Payroll Outsourcing

Payroll is an important business activity which comprises of diverse calculation such as calculation of salary and wages, overseeing tax deposits, withholding funds to proper government agencies, etc.? The main purpose of payroll outsourcing is to ensure that the right payroll is issued to employees on time by making minimal efforts by in-house employees.

Benefits of hiring outsourced vendors

There is no denying in that by outsourcing payroll activities, companies are able to save their a lot of time and money. If a company manages in-house payroll activities, it needs to shell more money for hiring professional accountant and providing him training from time to time. On the contrary, if the same task is assigned to outsource companies, they perform the work at less cost. Anybody who performs the task of payroll would be responsible in case of occurrence of any error. Needless to say, these errors would dig huge hole in revenues of companies as they attract high penalties. So, one of the best ways of avoiding these penalties is outsourcing payroll task as the company who performs the task would be responsible for all penalties. Last but not the least, for performing payroll task accurately, it is pertinent to use relevant software and upgrade them on regular basis, so outsourcing prevents companies to deal with issues like technological woes.

So, if you think availing payroll outsourcing services makes more sense, then start looking for reliable and professional outsourced vendors.

Hire services of Professional companies

Rather than hiring an individual for performing payroll task, outsource payroll task to the companies who have team of experts. Moreover, do enquire about the software programs used by them for performing the task. The most importantly, do not forget to ask about the pricing model followed by them. After gathering all facts, draw conclusion that to whom you want to outsource payroll task. There are several companies who are performing the task online and at affordable cost.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is out with a new report claiming that the Pentagon routinely spends billions each year on programs that have nothing to do with military readiness, arguing that at a time of budget troubles, there's no reason not to cut out what isn't needed.

As I detailed on my Twitter feed (@jamiedupree), the Coburn report details a host of items that may make the average American pound the dashboard in frustration, wondering whether the spending of the federal government can ever be reined in:

* Money from the military went to fund studies about slang used on Twitter and how it could be used to determine where that Twitter user was from is.gd/MaqkOV

* Twelve grants worth $6 million over two years went to research on the science of story telling http://t.co/clvdChIe

* The Navy spent $450,000 to observe the social interactions between a military robot and babies

* The Air Force spent $681,387 on a grant for research that showed a man brandishing a gun looked more powerful than a man without a weapon http://t.co/0JXYqYuJ

You can read Coburn's report - titled, the "Department of Everything" at http://is.gd/9CEiDB

96% Sister

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (2)

Seydoux perfectly captures the anger and self-defeat of ill-educated, hedonistic, man-chasing young women who live on the fringes.

L?a Seydoux fulfills Louise, and Kacey Mottet Klein, as Simon, is one more to join the pantheon of film's excellent child actors.

Haunting and sad. And absolutely worth seeing.

The chemistry between the two leads is a razor's-edge dance: feral, childish, tender and always complex.

Movies about wayward kids are a European specialty. The new film "Sister" deepens the specialty.

The influence of Belgian masters Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's documentary eye for youth on the margins is evident in Ursula Meier's calmly heartbreaking drama.

Emotionally engaging and impeccably crafted

Klein and Seydoux give such naturalistic performances that they're never overwhelmed by the spectacle.

"Sister" is loose and episodic, but held together with nicely sketched characters.

[A]voids bathos. . .reveals unexpected depth in a heartbreaking bond. . . Different classes conflict [in] adjacent spaces . . .in spare, realistic Dardennes' style.

Meier draws out wonderfully naturalistic performances from her young stars, with Mottet Klein particularly good as the young roustabout Simon ...

It comes over like a subtle short story and is well acted.

Meier's portrait of Simon ... is richly atmospheric and never sentimental.

An enigmatic, heartfelt account of a vulnerable young boy's yearning for a better life.

Most intriguing is how the writers and director have transformed what's essentially a rather dark, bleak story into something involving and emotionally resonant, all without ever turning sentimental.

It is an interesting and well-made movie, though with an uncertain ending.

Sister gradually reveals pattern in its tapestry of everyday life.

An expert piece of storytelling with a host of strong character turns and thematic depth to burn.

A healthy seam of mischief helps cut through the occasionally rote social comment.

An emotionally engaging, beautifully shot and impressively directed Dardennes-esque French drama with a superb script and excellent performances from Kacey Mottet Klein and L?a Seydoux.

An unusual, involving, slightly strained character study from Ursula Meier, the French director of 2008's satirical dystopia, 'Home'.

'Sister' often recalls the recent work of the Dardenne brothers of Belgium and that landmark of the French new wave, Francois Truffaut's 'The 400 Blows' (1959).

Psychologically complex. You may be shocked, you may be moved, but you won't easily forget "Sister."

Southeast Asia adopts human rights declaration

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? Southeast Asian leaders on Sunday adopted a human rights declaration despite last-minute calls for a postponement by critics, including Washington, who said the pact contains loopholes that could allow atrocities to continue.

The 10 leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, an unwieldy bloc of liberal democracies and authoritarian states, signed a document adopting the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, where the heads of state were holding an annual summit.

The nonbinding declaration calls for an end to torture, arbitrary arrests and other rights violations that have been longtime concerns in Southeast Asia, which rights activists once derisively described as being ruled by a "club of dictators."

ASEAN diplomats have called the declaration a milestone in the region despite its imperfections, saying it will help cement democratic reforms in countries such as Myanmar, which until recently has been widely condemned for its human rights record.

Philippine diplomat Rosario Manalo said it is significant that the region's less democratic governments have embraced the declaration.

Founded in 1967 as an anti-communist bloc in the Cold War era, ASEAN has taken feeble steps to address human rights concerns in the vast region of 600 million people, adopting a charter in 2007 where it committed to uphold international law and human rights but retained a bedrock principle of not interfering in each other's internal affairs ? a loophole that critics say helps member states commit abuses without consequence.

In 2009, the group unveiled a commission that was tasked to promote human rights but deprived of power to investigate violations or go after abusers.

ASEAN leaders committed to promote and protect human rights, along with "democracy, rule of law and good governance" in a joint statement they signed to launch the declaration. But provisions in the declaration say rights could be limited for reasons of security, public order and morality.

It adds that the "realization of human rights must be considered in the regional and national context bearing in mind different political, economic, legal, social, cultural, historical and religious backgrounds."

Rights groups say that such conditions could be used to justify violations.

"ASEAN has finally stumbled across the finish line with a flawed declaration that falls short of international standards," said Phil Robertson of the New York-based Human Rights Watch.

Washington has also expressed concerns, along with ASEAN members Indonesia and the Philippines, which threatened to withhold support until the regional bloc agreed to add a paragraph where it pledged to enforce the declaration with a level of commitment accorded to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, diplomats said.

The ASEAN decides by consensus, meaning that if just one country disapproved, the declaration's launching would have been scuttled. That could have been embarrassing for the regional grouping still struggling to repair the damage to its image after its last ministerial meeting in July collapsed due to infighting over the handling of South China Sea territorial disputes.

Myanmar's top diplomat, Wunna Maung Lwin, told The Associated Press that his country welcomes the declaration and will abide by it.

"It's a very significant step that has been taken by the ASEAN," he said.

US News: Train Vet Parade Collision Update; Gulf Oil Rig Fire Kills 1; Obama in SE Asia

Bystanders react as emergency personnel work the scene where a trailer carrying wounded veterans in a parade was struck by a train in Midland, Texas, Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012. (AP Photo/Reporter-Telegram, James Durbin)

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) -- Federal investigators say the warning signals at a railroad crossing in West Texas were activated before a parade float crossed the tracks in an accident that killed military veterans.
National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind made that announcement at a news conference Saturday. He said the signals had been activated seven seconds before the float crossed the tracks.
Four veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan were killed Thursday when a freight train slammed into the parade float in Midland. Sixteen people were injured.
Rosekind said the NTSB reconstructed the accident using video cameras from the train and a sheriff's vehicle.
He said the train started sounding its horn nine seconds before it hit the float. The train engineer also used the emergency brake five second before the crash.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Authorities say that divers hired by the owner of an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico that caught fire on Friday have recovered a body near the site.
Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Vega said the unidentified person was found Saturday evening by divers hired by Houston-based Black Elk Energy who were inspecting the platform. Vega said the Coast Guard was turning over the remains to local authorities.
The news came shortly after the Coast Guard suspended a 32-hour-long search for two workers missing after the fire erupted. The search covered a 1,400-square-foot area. Vega said the Guard could resume the search if there is credible evidence that one of the workers survived.
Four other workers who were severely burned remained at Baton Rouge General Medical Center on Saturday night.

6 police injured as helicopters collide in LA area
ALTADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say six Pasadena officers have minor injuries after two police helicopters collided over a helipad Saturday in the Los Angeles area.
Police Lt. Phlunte Riddle says a chopper that was landing came into contact with one that was taking off.
The collision caused the rotor blade of one of the helicopters to fall off and its tail to break.
The injured were taken to hospitals for further evaluation after the 4 p.m. collision in Altadena.
Riddle says they included a pilot and an observer in each of the Bell OH-58A helicopters and two officers on the ground.
FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer says his agency and the NTSB will investigate.

UMaine: Plane crash victims were frat brothers
OWLS HEAD, Maine (AP) -- The University of Maine has identified the three victims of a fiery plane crash as two current students and one alumnus.
The school and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity said Saturday that the victims were 22-year-old David Cheney, of Beverly, Mass.; 24-year-old Marcelo Rugini, an exchange student from Brazil; and 24-year-old William "B.J." Hannigan III, of South Portland.
All three were members of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Cheney was the fraternity's president.
The plane was taking off at the Knox County Regional Airport on Friday night when it struck a pickup truck. A deputy sheriff says the truck was authorized to be on airport grounds. The plane continued to climb but then spiraled downward into thick woods and burst into flames.
The university says DNA tests to confirm the identities aren't expected until Wednesday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Police say a southwest Missouri man who confessed to plotting to shoot up a screening of `Twilight' and a Walmart store had been detained after threatening a store clerk three years ago.
Bolivar Police Chief Steve Hamilton said Saturday that in 2009, 20-year-old Blaec Lammers followed a worker around a Walmart and threatened her. He wasn't charged but was committed for 96 hours.
In Missouri, hospitals, law enforcement and citizens can request a person be held against their will for up to 96 hours if he or she appears to be a threat to themselves or others.
Lammers was charged Friday with first-degree assault, making a terroristic threat and armed criminal action. His mother turned him in. He is jailed in Polk County.
Hamilton says Lammers doesn't have an attorney.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities say a New York City boutique owner was shot to death in the head with the same gun that killed two other shopkeepers in the same borough over the summer.
The Daily News reports (http://nydn.us/ULUD1F ) that the shop owner was behind the counter of She She in the Flatbush section when he was shot Friday night. The News says the gunman dragged his body toward the back of the store and covered it with clothing.
Police have identified the victim as 78-year-old Rahmatollah Vahidipour (rah-mah-TOH'-lah vah-HEE'-dee-pour) of Great Neck.
Leon Nwabueze (nwah-boo-EH'-zeh) owns the Nanso clothing shop across the street from the victim's store. He says Vahidipour was quiet and worked hard and closed his store each Saturday to observe the Jewish Sabbath.
No one has been arrested in the three shootings.

NJ official: Doc's home had bomb-making chemicals
RIDGEWOOD, N.J. (AP) -- Prosecutors say large amounts of chemicals commonly used for making bombs and explosive devices have been found at the home of an unemployed northern New Jersey doctor.
Sixty-year-old Roberto Rivera, of Ridgewood, faces several charges, including possession of a destructive device and recklessly creating a risk of widespread injury. His bail was set at $1 million cash. It wasn't known Saturday if he had retained a lawyer.
Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says investigators also found several assault rifles and other weapons when they searched Rivera's home Friday night. Ridgewood police had initially responded to the home after receiving a report that potentially hazardous materials might be at the residence.
Prosecutors say Rivera is unemployed but has a license to practice medicine in New York.

SC man arrested in deaths of 2 found in barrels
ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina authorities say they've arrested a man accused of killing two people more than a month ago and stuffing their bodies in barrels before dumping them into a lake.
Anderson County Sheriff's spokesman Chad McBride says John Michael Young was arrested early Saturday. A jail spokesman says Young was likely to make a first appearance before a judge later Saturday. He did not know if Young had an attorney.
Deputies charged Young with two counts of murder after collecting a chainsaw and machetes from his home near Lake Hartwell.
Authorities say Young killed 52-year-old Tony McGinnis in September and 37-year-old Andrea Mitchell in October by beating them in the head in woods near his home. Investigators haven't given a motive but say the slayings weren't random.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The gentle whir of passing barges is as much a part of life in St. Louis as the Gateway Arch and the Cardinals. It's a constant backdrop to a community intricately intertwined with the Mississippi River.
But next month, those barges packing such necessities as coal, farm products and petroleum could instead be parked along the river's banks.
The drought that has gripped the Midwest has left the Mighty Mississippi critically low. It'll get lower if the Army Corps of Engineers presses ahead with plans to reduce the flow from a Missouri River dam.
Mississippi River interests fear the reduction will force a halt to barge traffic at St. Louis, perhaps within weeks.
They warn the economic fallout could force layoffs, raise fuel costs and pinch the nation's food supply.

Another US military serviceman arrested on Okinawa
TOKYO (AP) -- Japanese police have arrested a U.S. Marine on suspicion of trespassing on the southern island of Okinawa amid anger over military crimes and demands for stricter regulations for U.S. troops.
Police say 1st Lt. Tomas Chanquet of the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma allegedly sneaked into a room through an unlocked door and slept until spotted by a resident who called police.
An alleged rape by two Navy sailors last month enraged Okinawans and reignited deep-rooted anti-base sentiment on the island, home to more than half the 52,000 U.S. troops in Japan.
The case led to a curfew on all troops in Japan, but two weeks later a U.S. airman allegedly assaulted a teenager. Sunday's incident also raises questions over the effectiveness of the curfew and other disciplinary steps.

Obama travels to Southeast Asia
(AP) -- President Barack Obama is due to arrive Sunday in Bangkok where he'll tour a monastery and then meet with the king and the prime minister of Thailand.
On Monday, Obama will travel to Myanmar where he'll meet with that country's president as well as activist Aung San Suu Kyi (ahng sahn soo chee) and deliver a speech encouraging Myanmar's ongoing democratic transition.
Afterward, Obama heads to Cambodia to attend the East Asia Summit. Obama is hoping to show that America is firmly committed to the region and will serve as a counter balance to growing Chinese power and influence.

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) -- The White House says it believes Israel "has the right to defend itself" against attack and that the Israelis will make their own decisions about their "military tactics and operations."
A top aide to President Barack Obama tells reporters traveling with the president to Asia on Air Force One that the U.S. and Israel both want an end to the rocket fire that's coming from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes says Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agree that "de-escalation is preferred," provided that Hamas stops firing into Israel.
Obama has spoken with the leaders of Egypt and Turkey, too.
Rhodes says they "have the ability to play a constructive role in engaging Hamas" and encouraging a de-escalation of the attacks.
